Fête science 2015

SPS reveals the secrets of plants at the Fête de la Science 2015!

This year, from October 9 to 11, the Saclay Plant Sciences LabEx once again participated in the Fête de la Science (Science Festival), at the Université Paris-Saclay. As in 2014, SPS had a booth at the Moulon Gymnasium, which attracts about 3,000 visitors each year over the three days of the Fête de la Science.

The workshops organized on Friday 9th October were dedicated to pupils from Elementary to High Schools. 12 groups of students took turns to visit the SPS stand and learnt about the properties of pigments which, by absorbing or reflecting light, give plants their color and allow plants to use the sun's energy to produce food. This workshop echoed the "Year of Light" theme of the 2015 edition of the Fête de la Science.

During the weekend workshops intended for the general public, adults and children discovered topics such as image analysis to model the organization of objects in space (used in SPS laboratories to model, for example, the growth of plant embryos), the relationships between plants and the pathogenic fungi which attack them, and the different uses of plant biomass.

This year, we had the chance to use popularization media designed last June by three L1 students from the Villebon-Charpak Institute during their 2 week internship at the IJPB in Versailles. Their missions were to design and produce for the LabEx one or more popularization media for children between the ages of 8 and 10. The multidisciplinary training provided at the Villebon-Charpak Institute allowed these motivated young people to explore their creativity and to offer us a flyer, which we distributed at the Fête de la Science, and an electronic game with question/answer sheets, which is currently being finalized and will be very useful for future events of this type.

In all, a dozen scientists took turns at the SPS LabEx stand during the three day event to tell the public about the secrets of these fascinating organisms that are the plants.

Big thanks to Emmanuelle Issakidis-Bourguet, Javier Arpón, Philippe Andrey, Mathilde Fagard, Agathe Jasson, Alban Launay, Valérie Méchin, Aurélie Baldy, Fadi El Hage and Corine Enard for their participation, as well as the SPS team for coordination!

We hope to see you in the future at the Fête de la Science which we wish to be always as dynamic, attractive and successful.
