Fascination of Plants Day 2026: a look back at the event organized by SPS

On May 21st, nearly 60 high school students had the opportunity to participate in a special day organized by SPS in the framework of the Fascination of Plants Day 2026 at the INRAE Center in Versailles.

This event offered the participants a unique immersion in the world of plants, thanks to a rich program. This program included several workshops addressing topics such as the domestication and selection of plants in the context of evolving agricultural practices; the impact of agriculture and our lifestyles, particularly our diet, on CO2 emissions and global warming; and the “Plant Awareness Disparity” phenomenon, which renders plants and their essential role in our daily lives and in the ecological transition invisible. The students also had the opportunity to visit the laboratories and greenhouses at the INRAE Center in Versailles.

The initial feedback we have received has been very positive overall. The students and their teachers found the activities engaging and insightful, and appreciated the rich discussions, despite a somewhat packed schedule.

A big thank you to Morgane Quesnot, Pierre Hilson, Mathilde Fagard, Jean Colcombet, Marianne Delarue, Pauline Savourat, and Samantha Vernhettes, whose efforts made this day a success!

This event is part of the broader science outreach activity led by SPS. The "Plants and Humans" workshop and laboratory visits are offered to young students throughout the school year. The "Change your plate for the climate" and “Plant Awareness Disparity” workshops are currently being rolled out and will soon be offered to a wider audience. SPS also organizes courses for high-school biology teachers, titled “Plant domestication, selection and biotechnologies“

The initiatives mentioned illustrate SPS’s strong commitment to science outreach, with a completely free program made possible by the involvement of researchers and lecturers from its laboratories. This approach reflects the priority SPS places on disseminating knowledge and raising awareness on issues related to the plant world.

What is the Fascination of Plants Day?

The international Fascination of Plants Day is sponsored by the European Plant Science Organization (EPSO). The goal of this activity is to get as many people as possible around the world fascinated by plants and enthused about the importance of plant science for agriculture and sustainable production of nutritious food, as well as for horticulture, forestry and the production of plant-based non-food products. SPS has participated in the Fascination of Plants Day since 2012.
